Cooking with Toddlers

For as long as I can remember I have been in the kitchen cooking with my mum. When my sister came along, who is 9 years younger than I, she joined us sitting up on the bench in her bouncer. When our little duckling came along he naturally joined me in the kitchen cooking. First in the bouncer, then later sitting on the bench and now he cooks with me. So I thought I would share some tips on cooking with toddlers…..well what I have learnt so far!

1. Choose an easy recipe

Toddlers have short attention spans, make it easier for yourself. Choose a recipe with only a handful of ingredients and a few steps.

2. The Mess

Yes there will be flour everywhere, fingers in the butter, spilt milk, and mouths full of cookie dough – embrace the mess, its lots of fun.

3. Cooking = Playtime

Once hands are clean and apron is on, our little duckling sits on the bench and plays. Let them play and explore. He explores how different ingredients taste (only if he wants to, there is no pressure), how ingredients feel, he pours, sprinkles, rolls and kneads, scoops and stirs.

4. Give them space

I let him roll his own cookies. Yes this is hard for me as I like to be in control! So I give him a small amount of dough and I show him how to roll it into balls and press on the tray. Last time we cooked he rolled a few and then ate the majority of them. A few made the tray – they had big finger holes through them, all different shapes and sizes but who cares. He made them himself, while I rolled the rest out. While I am happy to eat his cookies with him, I wouldn’t serve them up to guests! I can’t be certain that they weren’t licked on the way to the tray!

5. No force

Sometimes I’ll set up to cook with him and he gets on the bench and either doesn’t want to cook or is just ‘hard work’ for me. In those cases I give him two options depending on how much cleaning I want to do afterwards.

1. Playdough and a whole heap of cookie cutters etc

2. Mixing bowls, measuring cups and spoons and flour (or uncooked rice or pasta) and he pours and stirs and plays. Big mess but lots of fun and he enjoys pretending while I get stuck in cooking. mess

Final words…have fun and don’t stress. Once the food is in the oven I sit our little duckling in front of a favourite DVD while I clean up the mess. Afterwards we get to sit down and enjoy what we have cooked. What a rewarding activity to do.

Allergy friendly Coconut Slice – 4 ingredients, no bake

I love this recipe! It is super simple to make, and even easier to eat! I recently found the blog Chocolate covered Katie and her fantastic ‘Coconut crack bars’. It is very exciting as our little duckling can eat them! They are nut free, wheat and gluten free, dairy free, cane sugar free and amazingly delicious! I have changed it slightly from her original recipe, below is my take on it.

Ingredients

1 1/2 cups desicated coconut

1/4 cup agave syrup or maple syrup
3 tablespoons coconut oil
pinch of salt

1. Take 3/4 cup coconut and put in blender. Blend it up a bit so it is a bit finer. Pour into bowl and add the other 3/4 cup desicated coconut.

2. Add coconut oil, agave or maple syrup and a pinch of salt and stir to combine. Taste (just to make sure it is good!!!)

3. Line a small dish with baking paper and press in coconut mixture. Put in fridge until hard.

4. Optional extra – melt some allergy friendly chocolate (or chocolate of choice, I think dark would be best) and spread over the top of coconut mixture before placing in fridge.

Carefully cut into small squares. This best eaten straight from the fridge as when it is warm it is very delicate as the coconut oil starts to melt. Enjoy!

Easter Table – Toddler Gardening

As I walked into daycare a few weeks before Easter I noticed that the class had grown their on own grass in a plastic container to put some farm animal toys in for playtime. So I decided that we would attempt to grow our own Easter table.

A morning trip to Masters then home to plant some seeds…

Our little duckling loved digging in the soil, sprinkling in the seeds and watering our little grasslings in the weeks afterwards. We loved watching them grow and I loved listening to his conversations with the grass!

The final product! Little bunny painted by the little duckling sat waiting for the Easter Bunny to leave some chocolate!  And this Mamma Duck was super happy to find some allergy friendly chocolate so our little duckling could join in too!
Pretty happy with how it turned out, although the version I saw at Kindy was superior (I think they have done it before!). I think we will have to keep our basket and Bunny for next Easter, and add some more pieces to our display.

Little Allergy Boy

There is not a day that goes past where I am not thinking of food. Food that my little allergy boy can eat. It has been almost a year since we found out that our little duckling is allergic to eggs, peanuts and milk. In this time we have also found out that there are foods we try to avoid as they are either on the ‘high’ allergy risk or he is intolerant to, being strawberries, kiwifruit, sesame seeds, nuts, wheat, tomatoes and citrus…..phew! I’m exhausted just thinking about it!

Lately I have been thinking about all the time and energy I put into his allergies. I am constantly thinking about new meals for him, what to pack in the next lunchbox, experimenting with ingredients, creating new recipes and cooking meals for him. There is rarely a night that goes by where the three of us sit down to the same meal. While we have the support of our friends and family, I don’t know any other mums dealing with the allergies and food restrictions we have. Of course I would not change him for the world, allergies and all, but it is really tiring.

I am going to attempt to document the recipes we create this year in the hope that they may help others and help me deal with feeding our little allergy boy.

Charity collection update – Sept & Oct

Today marks the start of November and the realisation that my good intentions of blogging regularly just hasn’t happened. How the weeks are flying at the moment! I feel like I’ve blinked and September and October are gone! Now that November is upon us I really start to get into the Christmas spirit. I know it is super early but I just love Christmas and the notion of giving, makes me all excited! I have been continuing to add an extra toiletry item to my shopping each week for the charity collection I am doing this Christmas. If you want to go back and see what I did last year, here is the link.

It seems each time I head to my mum’s house she has something to add aswell. She is pretty amazing I think!
Donations from some wonderful friends! In one week! Feels like the stash of goodies is growing and reminds me that I want to put the word out and find more people that are willing to help me out.

Pretty impressed that we have collected one whole box of donations and there is still time left! I would love your help, even if it is just one item, it all helps. The donations are going to Surfers Paradise Crisis Care. They are a local charity that feed hot meals to local homeless and disadvantaged, and provide fantastic support to those who need it. I really want to head down and volunteer for a couple of hours, so that is my goal for the coming weeks. I would really like to see first hand where the donations will be going to.

While shopping this week I thought I could make up a toiletry pack for a baby as with a toddler myself I know how expensive that all is. I was shocked to see that you cannot but a tube of nappy rash cream for my allocated $5! So I bought a packet of the wipes we use ($4.99!) and will shop around for some more baby toiletries.

If you would like to help out, I am contactable on duckeggbluem@gmail.com or via my Facebook page.

Christmas charity collection 2012

Last year I was inspired by the blog  ‘One a week’ Project and decided to add an item to my groceries each week and donate to charity come Christmas time. I decided that we would spend an extra $5 each week on our groceries. It was a great success and with the support of friends and family we collected 6 baskets of groceries, which was much more than I originally thought I would collect. If you would like to read about it click here.

I am in the process of finalising which local charity to support for Christmas 2012 and have decided that I am going to start collecting now.

This year I have decided to collect only toiletries and make up some individual gift packs. Last year I found that when I got around to purchasing toiletries my $5 did not go very far.

So I am putting the call out this year to my friends, family and strangers. There are a couple of ways you can help out:

1. Its up to you how you decide to collect. You could add an item or two from the list below to your groceries each week or maybe just grab a few items once I put the call out later in the year organising pickup etc.

2. If you are a friend or family member not local to the Gold Coast you are welcome to pass on some money and I can buy on your behalf. Last year I was blessed with $50 sent up from a family member in Melbourne. It went very far.

3. Follow along with what I am doing. Maybe it inspires you to find a local charity in your area and donate items to them this Christmas, or to do something kind for a stranger.

Items I will be collecting
Shampoo and Conditioner
Hairbrushes/Combs
Deodorant – male and female
Face, hand, body cream
Toothbrush
Toothpaste
Soap/body wash
Razor/shaving cream
Lip balm
Sunscreen
Hand sanitizer
Pads/tampons
Bandaids

Over the next few months I will be posting updates of how I am going on my Facebook page.

If you know of anyone that may want to be involved but are not on Facebook, please get them to send me an email at duckeggbluem@gmail.com and I can organise via email.

The ending of Friends for Felix

A beautiful sunny Gold Coast day to end Friends for Felix. I’m happy that tonight I will be deleting the page from Facebook. I am ready for a break, more active play with our little duckling the days we are home and back to creating craft for myself and my friends. Am celebrating this afternoon by spending it with some of my favourite women. Nothing better than a play, a chat, some cake and a coffee!

This blog will continue and in the coming weeks when I have time I am going to start recording some of the allergy friendly recipes I have been creating for our little duckling.

Have a glorious day.

Love,
